“I don’t understand why you Singaporeans complain about your government.” Colleague from The Philippines.

On Labour Day, sometime after Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong delivered his May Day Rally speech, I was with some of my Workers’ Party colleagues doing house visits at Hougang SMC. I joined them for the second shift where we covered three blocks, one of which was a rental flat.

It was my first time visiting a rental flat and it felt like I was transported to an unfamiliar nation. The units were small (two-bedroom apartments), corridors were dark (admittedly, a storm was looming) and the air stale. We came across strange units where residents were hoarding items, another who was keeping three pigeons, a mynah and countless stray cats, and one who kept a dog that was clearly in need of some medical attention.

All this, while thinking about PM Lee’s May Day Rally speech. The disconnect could not have been more apparent.  Read more

It’s been 10 months since I joined the Workers’ Party. How time flies.

These 10 months, many things have changed. My perspective, priorities, people who matter and people who don’t. I’ve seen and heard many things during this time, one of which was an experience I had recently while helping out at the Kaki Bukit constituency. Read more

“The Government seems very reluctant it to take on a larger financial responsibility for caring for our senior citizens. Instead, it hides behind the mantras of self-reliance and filial piety to justify its relatively low expenditure on healthcare for the elderly…

This regressive transfer of risks from government to citizens must count as one of the PAP Government’s biggest policy failures in the last decade.” – Gerald Giam, Debate on the President’s Address, 18 October 2011

In light of the recent transport fare hikes, the statement put forth by Mr Gerald Giam could not ring more true.  Read more

Foreign Talent: Hiding Behind the Notion of a ‘Cosmopolitan Society’

“Singapore has to be as cosmopolitan as other world class cities like New York and London, for its own survival and success.”- Former Ministor Mentor Lee Kuan Yew

The issue of the influx of foreign talent is one of the many ‘hot button issues’ of Singapore in 2011. On the surface, it seems like Singaporeans are getting increasingly frustrated with the foreign talent issue because of overcrowding and job security. Some have even been accused of xenophobia – after all, “we ourselves are descendants from immigrants“. However, I believe that it is not simply about job security, overcrowding and xenophobia. Rather, it is a question of the Singaporean identity.
